Aberdeen is often best known as being the stronghold for UK oil. Located in Northeast Scotland, this strong industrial city has much to offer in the way of art, culture, and high street living, due to the wealth pouring into it from the oil wells just offshore.
Sometimes known as the Granite city due to the almost-exclusive use of granite to make most of the buildings, Aberdeen has a unique way of standing out despite all the gray. Like the granite, the shimmering deposits of life and vibrant style that stand out from the often gray background of the city is a wonder to discover.

Central
This area of Aberdeen is close to all the best restaurants, shops, and other amenities that one would find in a city centre. The buildings here are almost all built from that distinctive granite that is still part of the architectural tradition. There are many boutique hotels here for visitors to stay in, and we also recommend trying out one of the boutique hotels that seem to be cropping up in the area for an extra special experience.
West End
The West End is still directly connected to downtown via Queens road, but this area is less apartments and more a combination of small builds, houses, and villas. This area is very popular with the younger yuppies and business executives, and has the movie to prove it. Try out one of the posh modernized bed and breakfasts in this area, or if you’re feeling really fancy, rent out a villa for yourself to really see what the other side of Aberdeen lives like.
Old Aberdeen
Old Aberdeen is a very popular place to stay, with its historic old world charm playing out in rosy cottages and old houses that are very cute and cosy. We highly recommend renting out a cottage to see for yourself why this is one of the most popular places for people to live in Aberdeen, having both a small town feel while still being easily accessible to the center of town.
One of our favorite things to do in Aberdeen is to visit the Maritime Museum, with its huge collection of artifacts explaining the maritime history of the area with lots of family-friendly displays and explanations. There is also the wonderful Duthie Park Winter Gardens, which is a series of large and airy atriums that visitors can see year round, offering a beautiful selection of plants from tropical to desert, and there’s even rumors of a larger than life frog in one of the ponds for kids to delight over!
If you’re visiting in the spring and summer, there are some attractions that we would definitely recommend for visitors to catch a glimpse of. One of these being the Linn O’ Dee park, which holds within its boundaries many examples of typical highlander landscape, from lush forest to rocky outcroppings that are incredibly fun for any amateur hiker to climb. There is also Craigievar Castle, the 17th century former home of the Bishop of Aberdeen.
All visitors must check out Footdee (or Fittie as some affectionately call it) the traditional fishing village with quirky low buildings in which fishermen and their families used to live. Colorfully decorated with quick access to Aberdeen beach, this is a charming and offbeat place to visit.
Aberdeen has very fickle weather that makes it difficult to plan a trip, but we’ve found that July and August are pretty good bets as far as visiting goes. These months tend to be the most dry and the warmest as well. Try to avoid November through to March as these are the coldest and wettest months.
If you don’t mind a little bit of rain but warmer temperatures, the bolder traveler is encouraged to go during May, when Aberdeen is at its greenest. If you go during this time as well, there’s a good chance of spotting some of the lambs or calves that populate the countryside here.
