Costa Adeje is the much needed answer to the problem of over-marketing; the Playas de las Americas have been very successful in landing themselves a top ten spot on every list of ‘where to go for a good time,’ but it often means that other visitors, such as families with small children, older travelers, or even those who aren’t interested in a rowdy or loud vacation, were left without many alternatives for their stay. This is where Costa Adeje comes in.
Stretching along an impressive length of the coast, this new resort town is much more modern and classier than the Playas de Las Americas, and has the five star ratings to prove it. Less crowded and loud, there is nevertheless a good number of quality restaurants, bars, and other facilities nearby to ensure that visitors will never be bored. For a taste of Tenerife without the killer hangover, there’s no better place we can recommend than Costa Adeje.
Playas de las Americas
Playas de Las Americas is one of the most popular places to go in Tenerife. This is the place to be if travelers want to say in the thick of things, with plenty of resorts, beachfront hotels, and holiday villas to stay in, and almost endless numbers of bars, restaurants, and clubs to keep one satisfied all day and night.
La Caleta
Many people think of La Caleta as a sleepy little fishing village but it’s a magical place in Tenerife that drips with charm and magic. We highly recommend coming here for at least a day trip to get away from the hustle and bustle of Playas de las Americas, or for the travelers who like something a little more on the quiet side, this is an ideal destination. Full of good restaurants and charming private villas and vacation homes, we recommend staying somewhere with local charm so that you can thoroughly soak in the unique flavor and culture of this small village.
Costa Adeje has long been a popular destination for beach goers and those who like to play in the surf and sun, but there’s many more things to explore in Costa Adeje besides the beautiful beaches and blue water. We highly recommend a walk around the Barranco del Infierno, a beautiful ravine that visitors can walk up and down in a brisk hike. Be sure to book ahead however, because they want to preserve the area as a nature reserve, there is a daily limit of 300 people allowed on the trail.
If the water is your thing but you don’t necessarily want to be in it, Costa Adeje is very good for sailing and for boat tours; visitors should take advantage of the opportunity to cruise through the beautiful blue waters with other boaters; to get a chance to see dolphins, watch local fisherman bring in their catches, or to explore some of the smaller islands right off the coast. These tours and excursions are easily bookable near the water; but be sure to bring sunscreen! Once you’re out there; you won’t want to come back for anything.
The weather at Costa Adeje is beautiful year round; with peak times being between June and August, which is also peak times for the beaches to be super crowded. Try to get there in either late May or early September in order to maximise beach time without having to compete with other tourists.
We recommend avoiding the late fall, as this is the rainy season. While the temperatures on the island will still be quite warm and gentle, the rain falls rather hard and if you’re not prepared for it, can be quite unpleasant.
