There are a lot of students in town for most of the year meaning that there is also a rich arts, theater, and music scene that will keep you out and about all day.

Whether it’s for a romantic weekend getaway or for a exploration of the French provincial, there is no better place for your holiday.

BEST NEIGHBORHOODS

Aix en Provence is a very compact town; it is easy to take a walk around the central part of it in just an hour or two. However, there are definitely some neighborhoods that have more charm than others, depending on what you’re looking for.

Old Town

Old Town is in the middle of Aix en Provence and is easily defined by the large boulevard that wraps around it. It’s easy to get lost in here due to the small wandering streets, so be sure to keep a map or smartphone with you. But this is part of its charm. We recommend one of the many bed and breakfasts here, for a romantic weekend getaway or chance to relax while strolling around this charismatic town center.

Mazarin

To the south of Cours Mirabeau is Mazarin, a neighborhood that trendy and chic holiday goers can only dream of. Built in the 17th century, it is traditionally where the upper class of Aix en Provence live, and thus is full of fashionable boutiques and restaurants. Rent one of these out for your own extravagant taste of Southern France, or go to one of the boutique hotels in this area to feel thoroughly pampered and spoiled.

Cours Mirabeau

Cours Mirabeau itself is a grand promenade of a boulevard that is lined with trees and beautiful 17th century mansions. It is a must-do activity for all visitors to walk down its leafy length and enjoy a cup of coffee at one of its many streetside cafes. There are plenty of trendy upscale hotels in this area, as well as historical vacation rentals that will blow your mind with their stately beauty.

Northern District

For art enthusiasts and creative wanderlusters, the northern district is perfect. Seen as Cezanne country, this is where the famous artist lived and where his studio is located. Stay in the north for a taste of the countryside, or to take advantage of the many wineries and long leisurely strolls. Stay in a countryside bed and breakfast or a vacation cottage to fully take advantage of the beautiful surroundings.

OUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO AND SEE

Aix en Provence as we’ve said before is quite a small town. We recommend taking at least one day to walk around and enjoy the small cafes, boutiques, and quaint nooks and crannies that the city has to offer. The architecture, from the buildings to the bubbling fountains throughout the town, will surely charm all holiday goers and immediately put everyone at ease. For the rest of your trip however, here are some of our favorite activities:

Aix en Provence is nestled in the middle of the provencal countryside which makes for easy access to the many lavender fields, wineries, and mountains to walk around on. We highly recommend booking a tour in advance as it will often come with transport from the city center, or renting a car and driving through the countryside at your own leisure. Go in the late spring to catch the lavender blooms, or in the fall to see the grapes at their ripest and to witness their harvesting.

Art buffs will love exploring the home of Cezanne, who lived just to the North of the city. Explore his life and works by touring his home and his studio, and stop by the Hotel de Caumont art center or the Granet museum for a truly ironic collection of french paintings from the 16th century onwards that is sure to dazzle and inspire any traveler.

WEATHER

Holiday goers should aim to get to Aix en Provence by June or July at the latest to see the lavender blooms, but avoid late July and August in order to avoid the crowds. If lavender is not your thing, we suggest seeing the equally spectacular poppy blooms in May, or going in September when it’s a little bit cooler and the fall harvest is at its best.

The town is very quiet and cold in the winter, but if you aren’t picky about the weather, the hotel and vacation rental prices are very good during this time, and a cozy walk around the city, coupled with a glass of wine in front of a roaring fire is quite appealing to many off-season tourists to this beautiful french town.
