OUR FAVORITE THINGS TO SEE AND DO
Inverness is full of rich history that deserves to be explored by visitors to its full extent. We highly recommend starting with the Culloden Battlefield, where the last battle between England and Scotland occurred and the fate of Scotland was sealed here in their defeat in 1746. Explore the visitor’s center for an interactive and highly detailed explanation of the historic significance of this field. Cawdor castle, just several miles away, is also a famous historical stop. Noted mainly for being the site by which Macbeth murders Duncan as told by Shakespeare (although in real life Macbeth kills Duncan at the Battle of Elgin). Nearby check out Fort George, which houses a military museum within its impressive walls.
Obviously, visitors should take a walk along Loch Ness, including a stop at Urquhart Castle which is just on the shore of this beautiful loch. Then, visitors should take a walk into town to explore the Caledonian Canal, which is an artistic canal that is always pleasantly occupied by locals enjoying the fresh air of the area. From there, check out Inverness Cathedral for an impressive and beautiful taste in the architecture that has shaped the town from the 19th century onwards.
WEATHER
Northern Scotland is not necessarily known for good weather, but with proper planning, it is possible to have a very pleasant visit to Inverness. We recommend going in the summer, in either July or August as these are normally the warmest months of the year. April and May are ideal for being usually pretty dry months, but don’t be surprised by a random squall or two.
From October onwards the weather can be pretty unpredictable, but the well-prepared traveler, with a windproof jacket and an umbrella, should be okay.
